MAZE Pipe - Weedgets

As long as people have been lighting up, they have been looking for more enjoyable ways to consume cannabis. By its nature, combusting flower is going to produce hot smoke and some degree of tar and resin. While other methods of consumption have come along to address the issue, from the invention of bongs thousands of years ago to modern vaporizers, few have the immediacy and simplicity of a classic pipe.

Thus, the Weedgets MAZE Pipe is making some pretty bold claims at being able to significantly reduce the temperature of a hit, while also keeping out resin and rogue pieces of flower (what many in the culture refer to as “scoobie snacks”). Could this humble pipe really be a new experience in smoking? We packed a bowl to find out.

True to its claims, the MAZE Pipe does lower the temperature of a hit, keeps any stray plant matter from making its way into your mouth, and is incredibly easy to use and clean. In the wide world of smoking accessories, there are few that deliver on their promises, but the MAZE Pipe does just that. The small bowl is only designed for a hit or two, but those few hits will indeed be cool, smooth, and free of any escaped bud or embers.

The moment you disassemble the pipe to clean it and see all of the tar and resin that the pipe catches, you literally breathe a little easier knowing none of that made its way inside your lungs. It was an eye-opening experience for all of the review team. Even when you’re consciously aware that such a thing is part of smoking with a typical pipe, seeing it physically changes the experience.

Now, our review team has a spectrum of consumption preferences and tolerances, but we are all seasoned consumers to some degree. To get some outside feedback on the pipe, we had two friends try it who rarely smoke cannabis, primarily because they don’t enjoy harsh hits. The look of amazement on their faces upon hitting the MAZE Pipe is what really sealed the deal for our reviewers. Our friends went wild for it. This is the thing they thought they’d never find.

Furthermore, the detachable tip is very worth mentioning. A handy little accessory on its own, it can be used as a joint holder (you can purchase tips separately, and in a variety of sizes, from Weedgets). At the very least, it filters stray flower bits, and cuts down on the smell that resin can leave on your hands. However, amid a pandemic, and likely for long after, the option to have your own smoking device could go a long way in reducing exposure. This certainly added to the score for us.  It’s not a functionality we are used to seeing, but one we’ll be looking for in other devices going forward.

In terms of general ease, the MAZE Pipe is as simple as any other straight pipe, with the form factor of a spoon pipe. . We instinctively looked for a carb, only to find there wasn’t one. We were skeptical, but on the actual draw, we discovered a carb wasn’t needed whatsoever, making it even more user-friendly. It’s a smooth, direct hit, and probably among the easiest ways to smoke weed we’ve seen.

Once you see what the pipe is filtering out for you, it’ll be hard to go pack to using anything else, and you’ll want to clean it more often. Thankfully, cleaning the MAZE is also incredibly simple, just pull it apart and go to town. Each piece can be cleaned with simple rubbing alcohol or dish soap and warm water. This simple feature is actually one of the many small details of the MAZE Pipe that set it apart. Like most consumers, we do not enjoy an arduous cleaning process whatsoever (and with glass pieces, it’s usually the time most likely to break something). Those worries are gone with this pipe.

How you feel about the look of the MAZE will really depend on your personal aesthetic. If you like the more “fun” wacky side of cannabis, the bright colors and swirls might be right up your alley. We preferred the more subdued flat blue tone, and would have liked a few less conspicuous options. While you won’t lose it in a dark bag or backpack, it can be difficult to conceal if you’re trying to be discreet. Though the silicon makes sense for the design of the pipe, it does have a less refined aesthetic to some. We did like how portable and sturdy the MAZE is, it looks like you could drop it off a cliff and have it work just fine. The quality of the machining and molding of the pieces is very professionally done, and speaks to the durability of the pipe. Overall, the appearance speaks a little more towards function over form, however, the function is excellent, so one might be inclined to not really care.

This is a tough one. While the $49.99 price tag may seem steep, how much value that translates to is going to be up to the consumer. As stated, the MAZE by Weedgets does something we haven’t seen before, and does it well. Thus, part of what you’re paying for with the pipe is its patent-pending design and functionality. There is certainly more than one trend setter out there who would have you believe that an aesthetically pleasing $50 sleek and sexy spoon smokes differently than every other traditional spoon pipe you’ve used, and they would be wrong. However fancier looking that piece might appear, it will let out the same hot smoke and resin as any other pipe. There’s a good chance that your heady, $200 custom piece doesn’t hit as smooth as a MAZE, so if smoke quality alone is your deciding factor, the value is there.

However, aesthetics can mean a lot to the smoking experience. For many smokers, the feel and look of silicon is unfamiliar, the same can be said for smoking with a stainless steel screen. In some circles, especially glass enthusiasts, these materials might be looked down on. Such views ignore the reasons alternate materials were chosen in the first place. The silicon is far, far easier to clean than glass, and won’t break. It also conducts heat less, and carries less germs. Still, personal preferences can be hard to break.

While the pipe is perfect, almost ideal, for the beginner smoker, a $50 investment isn’t typically what people go for on their first try. That being said, the first time we showed it to new smokers, they wanted to go out and buy one, so it’s a bit of a toss-up (and we did test this with some new smokers!).

Lastly, in these germ-conscious times, the ability to swap out your personal tip may be an invaluable trait. We cannot make specific health claims about anything on the site (as we’ve stated many times, we are not doctors), however the logic that reducing exposure reduces risk of infection seems pretty sound. For some, this alone might make the price worth it.

The MAZE Pipe is an unassuming little piece of technology that hides an excellent smoking experience. Hands down, if someone is smoking for the first time, this is the pipe we would want to hand them to do it. Simple, straightforward, smooth and enjoyable. It tackles a lot of the little details that make typical pipe smoking more inconvenient and less enjoyable than other consumption methods. The removable tip (and all of the tips that Weedgets makes) are an innovative and valuable feature, for both cleanliness and reducing germ exposure. While its greatness might not be immediately evident, the details and features of the MAZE make for a truly enjoyable smoking experience.
